Participants will gain insight into international perspectives on supply chain reshoring, including the importance of power relationships at national and local levels. The talk will explore how these soft power influences can influence local economic prosperity in relation to supply chain localisation. The presentation will also present broader findings captured from two international contexts namely, Japan and Spain:
Spanish/Basque Context
· Policy can be both an inhibitor and an accelerator of reshoring
· Cutting-edge technology has a limited impact on reshoring
· Reshoring is unduly influenced by the bias of the Chinese economy
· The private sector is the driving force behind reshoring
Japanese Context
· Government funding creates an imbalance and a reliance on grants
· Government funding for reshoring is helping to revitalise sector-specific
manufacturing
· Reshoring is being used to drive specialisation and influence geo-political
power
The findings of this research highlight a future blueprint for public sector procurement and the importance of learning from differing international responses to global supply chain challenges.
