The challenge of how we practically deliver sustainable services is one that most of us are very new to and for which little exists in the way of detailed guidance.
This session will cover the inspiring story of work undertaken in parallel in Defra and DWP Digital to try and tackle this knotty problem.
Ned, Defra, will talk about how we can transition from a user- to a planet-centric mindset, before demonstrating how we can map the infrastructure that enables a service behind the scenes. He will then introduce a set of principles for the design and delivery of greener services, which have been iterated through input from colleagues across the public sector, and provide a sense of what good practice looks like.
Ishmael, DWP Digital, will speak about the importance of robust and holistic carbon measurements for government digital services. While government has robust models to predict and measure economic costs, there are few such models for environmental costs, and none for digital services. He will explain the work he has been involved with to measure the CO2 per transaction of some high-profile services, and his plans to develop meaningful and actionable KPIs so that environmental impacts become part of policy and design thinking in government.
